In an effort to welcome them to Ireland, a charity has donated its 2,000th reconditioned bicycle to those who have left the conflict in Ukraine.

The Good Bike Project, which was started by Paul McQuaid of River Cycles in Dublin City Centre, achieved its goal today, claiming that it is a sign of the continuous friendliness of regular Irish people to foreigners in Ireland.

According to Mr. McQuaid, the effort started early last year when a friend requested him to find some bicycles for a young Ukrainian family that had recently immigrated to Ireland.

Mr. McQuaid, whose family is well-known in the racing community, said he made the decision to help others in need after seeing how much the present meant to the family.

“A year and a half ago I got a text message from a friend saying there was a Ukrainian lady who had just arrived at Dublin Airport and needed bicycles,” I texted this lady and said I would give her those bicycles.”

Karina Tarasova, a 16-year-old who moved to Ireland from Ukraine a year ago, received the 2,000th bicycle.

“It's important to me because a bike helps how I get to school because I'm walking or waiting for a bus and Luas, it's too long,” Karina remarked at the occasion. Having a bike simplifies my life considerably.

“I am so grateful to have it, thank you so much.”
