52-year-old Patrick Kielty from Dundrum, County Down, succeeds Ryan Tubridy, whose 14-year tenure came to an end in May.
The Late Late will be cut down to 90 minutes from its original July 1962 airing.
Gay Byrne, the original host, is still a huge inspiration, according to Kielty.
"I think watching Gay perform his acts while watching the show as a kid... I believe his usage of talking both to the audience and away from the camera was fantastic.
"It was like walking into the parlour," the audience member said.
The major lesson I've taken away from the show throughout the years, he continued, is to treat everyone equally. This sitcom excels at portraying everyone as being the same, which is why it has endured over time.
Kielty claimed to have gotten a congratulations text from Tubridy, his predecessor.
When a scandal over improperly declared payments RTÉ made to Tubridy in the summer became out, he had already stepped down as presenter of the Late Late Show earlier in the year but was still going strong as the host of his daily show on RTÉ Radio One.
