The airport closed last night at 11 p.m. and reopened today at noon. It anticipated that this would cause a number of flights to be delayed.

Aer Lingus services to London and Ryanair flights to Stansted, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Malta, and Porto were also interrupted.

Two Aer Lingus flights that were scheduled to arrive in Shannon this morning from New York and Boston were diverted to Dublin.

According to a representative for The Shannon Airport Group, Shannon Airport briefly closed at 11 p.m. yesterday due to unexpectedly high fog that occurred during a time of necessary taxiway maintenance work.

A second statement read: "We are pleased to announce that Shannon Airport has now reopened and resumed normal operations as of 1pm."

"We anticipate there will be some disruptions to the flight schedule throughout the day, and we regret any inconvenience this may cause to our passengers," stated a spokesman.

Today's passengers are encouraged to contact their airlines for the most recent flight information.

"Our airport staff and airline partners will continue to work to minimise any further delays or disruptions, and we appreciate your understanding at this time," said a spokeswoman.
