Mary Shanahan, the Cathaoirleach of the Kerry Association in Dublin, paid homage to Ms. Hannon, a native of Duagh, County Kerry, stating: “This award is presented in recognition of the valuable contribution Katie has made to public service broadcasting.”
She specifically cited Ms. Hannon's efforts to dispel claims of female sexual assault inside the Irish Defence Forces.
In the wake of this revelation, the government launched an inquiry and fully embraced each of the thirteen suggestions in the final report.
Ms. Shanahan also brought up Ms. Hannon's community service as the Kerry Hospice Foundation's patron.
“I am delighted and honoured to be named Kerry Person of the Year,” Ms. Hannon remarked, accepting the honour.
“Duagh has always been “home” to me, and I will always be a Kerry woman living elsewhere. Thus, this is very unique.”
