According to the most recent results released by the Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa), Ireland ranked in the top 15 in both maths and science.

The Pisa study, an OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) project, assesses 15-year-olds' capacity to apply their knowledge and abilities in reading, arithmetic, and science to tackle real-world problems.

The most recent Pisa, which was first administered in 2000, was carried out in 2022 with representative samples of almost 690,000 students from the 81 participating nations.

The outcomes were typical of the 29 million 15-year-olds residing in those nations.

5,569 pupils from 170 schools in Ireland took part. In all three categories, their scores were higher than the OECD average.

Despite having a two-point decrease in its mean score of 516 from the previous evaluation, Ireland moved up to the second position in the world chart for reading in 2018.

With a mean score in science of 504, which was eight points higher than in 2018, Irish teens were placed 12th overall, up from 22nd four years earlier.

Although Ireland's mean mathematical score decreased by eight points to 492, its total global ranking increased from 21st to 11th.
