Families can enjoy some Christmas magic in a cosy and laid-back atmosphere thanks to this initiative.
Staff and students from the University of Galway's School of Psychology are in charge of organising the event, which provides designated times so that each visit can be customised to fit specific needs.
The intention, according to Dr. Ciara Keegan-Gunning, is to provide families with an opportunity to see Santa in a setting that suits them.
"We do a lot of work behind the scenes in preparation, to see what sort of needs the children have, what they like, what they might be interested in."
Those who put in the effort get to experience some priceless moments.
"We create magic in this room and what we see in those children’s faces is the magic of being understood, being accepted, being comfortable in the environment that they’re in and having some fun with the people most important to them - their families," Dr. Keegan-Gunning states.
Since the sensory grotto's inaugural staging in 2017, the event has gained enormous popularity and significance for parents and their children due to its inclusive nature.
Kai Duffy came to visit this year, along with her siblings Finn and Halley. The trip to see Santa has enormous significance, according to her mother Lois:
"We always have to look for things to accommodate Kai, given her complex needs, so wheelchair accessible, toning down the lights and the music, so the thought that goes into this means a lot”.
Kai's siblings need to be able to take part in a pre-Christmas ritual with her, according to Mrs. Duffy. "It makes it so much more special [for them] to see Kai is included in something special, that most families get to take part in."
Andy McDonald, who went to the sensory grotto with his wife and kids, expressed similar feelings. Since Sadie is four years old and non-verbal, he stated that "it's pretty important to have somewhere specifically for kids with autism, or kids who have sensory issues."
"Because it is run by the School of Psychology, the people know what they are dealing with and the fundamental needs that are there."
This year's Sensory Santa events will now take place at grottos in Galway and Mayo thanks to additional sponsorship from nearby businesses, accommodating about 80 families.
In 2024, the organisers hope to build even more on the success.
