The celebrations were kicked off by Oscar-winning singer-songwriter Glen Hansard, who paid homage to the recently dead Pogue’s vocalist Shane MacGowan by singing A Rainy Night in Soho.

The crowd sung along as many buskers who often play in the vicinity mounted the stage to sing renditions of a variety of other well-known songs, including Zombie by The Cranberries. The participants were dressed in festive attire and wearing Santa hats.

The 12th iteration of Dublin Simon's yearly Christmas Eve Busk took place in front of the famous Gaiety Theatre, which is close to Grafton Street.

On one of the largest fundraising days of the year for the charity, frantic last-minute shoppers paused to observe and participate in the contribution drive.

Hansard described playing at the free outdoor event as a blessing and an honour.

“This is all about raising money for shelter for people, brothers and sisters, by singing a few songs.”

“I'm so thankful to everyone who comes every year; what they bring is just amazing,” he continued.

While Santa Claus himself urged observers to search deeply for individuals who might be sleeping rough on the chilly winter night, kids scrambled up onto parents' shoulders, bins, and trees to get a better view.

During a performance of The Frames' famous song Star Star, a member of the audience once joined Hansard on stage to cover the drum set.

Renowned singers like Imelda May and several Dublin Simon service users were among the singers.

“Thanks so much, the greatest gift you can give anybody is your time and attention-this has been wonderful,” Hansard said to the assembly.
