Customers will now have to pay a completely refundable deposit in addition to the drink price if they buy a beverage in a plastic bottle or aluminium can with the Re-turn emblem.

According to recent Amárach research, 95% of consumers intend to participate in the circular economy project, and 82% of consumers support the implementation of the deposit return system.

Eighty-two percent of respondents said that the deposit on drink containers will encourage people to return empty drink containers to participating businesses across the country, and ninety-four percent think that their recycling habits will have an effect on future generations.

Sixty-seven percent of consumers think that recycling drink containers can help the environment on a personal level. They mostly think that recycling and reusing more can help.

"The positive feedback on the introduction of deposit return has been really encouraging," Re-turn CEO Ciaran Foley stated. We recognise that this is a significant shift in behaviour, and we are happy to have such support. It's also fascinating to see how many respondents expressed worry about how their recycling habits may affect future generations. We are confident that Ireland will welcome this development and assist us in meeting EU recycling goals as well as lowering trash and litter levels.
