Senators John McGahon and Garret Ahearn were unable to vote on the government's plans, which the public decisively rejected since they had to depart for an early morning trip.

The Irish Independent reports that although the polls in the area opened at 7 a.m. on Friday, the voting period was over since the trip had been scheduled in advance.

Mr. McGahon told the Independent that he would be attending the game and that it would be “impossible” for him to vote at his neighbourhood polling place in Dundalk because his flight was scheduled to depart at 8 a.m.

With the words, “Unfortunately, I was out of the country and could not cast my vote in Tipperary,” Senator Ahearn further acknowledged that he did not cast a ballot.

The final voter participation on Friday was an extremely low 44.36% countrywide, with 67.7% of voters rejecting the Family Amendment and 73.9% rejecting the Care Amendment.
