The Inshore Patrol Vessels (IPVs) are now undergoing repairs at the naval facility in Haulbowline, County Cork, after being purchased from the government of New Zealand.
The ship can accommodate up to 16 more people. It has a complement of 20, and it will sail throughout the east and south-east coasts of the Irish Sea.
“These names have deep roots in ancient Ireland, symbolising women in Irish mythology and history, but they also have relevance in contemporary Ireland because variations of these names are still known today,” Mr. Martin stated.
Tánaiste and Minister for Defence Micheál Martin has named two Navy Service ships LÉ Aoibhinn and LÉ Gobnait.
