When activated, the cameras, which will be worn on a garda's breast, will glow red.

Although it is not required, Gardaí will be urged to notify the public when they are in use as a matter of best practices.

The collected video would remain inaccessible until the cameras were inserted into a docking station, after which it would be moved to a central repository.

Only when a member is utilising their garda powers may they be turned on.

This technology, according to Minister for Justice Helen McEntee, is part of her strategy to make sure An Garda Síochána is a cutting-edge police force appropriate for the digital era.

She went on to say that it is unfair to put gardaí in circumstances where they are the only ones unable to document the events.

They will go into service today in the Dublin stations on Pearse Street, Store Street, and Kevin Street.
