The National Transport Authority provided all funding for the Kilcullen Road Active Travel Scheme in Naas, which took more over five million euros to construct.

The initiative is a component of the NTA's Cycle Network Plan for the Greater Dublin region (GDA), which outlines intentions to provide excellent cycling routes in the Naas region.

According to the plan, Naas is a town with a sizable population core inside the GDA that has the potential to grow into a model cycling town and create a network that will enable a notable rise in cycling for all reasons.

This segment of the cycling network is a component of a larger scheme to improve the county's sustainable transport infrastructure.

Kilcullen Road was reconstructed for around 900 metres in order to increase the entire network's connectivity for cyclists and pedestrians.

This made it easier to link the bike facilities on the South Ring Road with Piper's Hill bike infrastructure in Naas.

Together with landscaping, the improvement projects include better surface water drainage, bike lanes, pedestrian walkways, and crossings as well as traffic calming techniques and public realm enhancements.

Kildare County Council Deputy Chief Executive Annette Aspell praised the plan, calling it a wonderful accomplishment to have purpose-built active transportation infrastructure connected to the town's centre.

“We’re dedicated to our climate action targets as well as supporting the Government’s Climate Action Plan,” he stated.

“Projects such as this are designed to provide the capacity for a significant increase in the number of walking and cycling routes, in support of those targets,” he stated.
