DAA is requesting approval for a westward extension of the current Holiday Blue long-term parking lot in order to provide 950 "airport staff car parking spaces" in the planning proposal that will be submitted to the Fingal County Council.
The 10.5-acre application site is bordered to the north by South Parallel Road, to the west by Harristown Lane, and to the south by Horizon Business Park, according to a public planning notice for the project.
The planning notice indicates that 48 of the 950 spots will be designated for individuals with limited mobility, and the construction will entail the demolition of an existing cattle fence and hard standing area.
Additionally, 96 spaces in the expanded parking lot will have electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. The proposal is being made against the backdrop of increased passenger demand at Dublin Airport's parking lots.
A representative for daa stated on Monday that employees of the increasing number of businesses that use the Dublin airport campus, such as airlines, ground handling companies, and logistics organisations, must submit the application.
"The number of parking spaces at Dublin Airport for both passengers and staff will be increased," he stated. He went on, "Our Infrastructure Application, submitted to Fingal County Council last year, includes plans to add an additional 2,500+ long and short-term car parking spaces.
The number of car parking spaces available for passengers also needs to increase to meet demand." "Timelines for the opening of the new car park will depend on how long it takes to secure planning permission," he stated in the staff parking application.
Additionally, the spokesman stated that "our Infrastructure Application includes plans for a new Ground Transportation Centre which would incorporate an expanded and enhanced bus station and ultimately also the Dublin Airport Metrolink stop" and that "DAA is fully committed to increasing the volume and attractiveness of public transport options available for passengers and staff."
"We continue to explore every option available and remain in discussions to see if we can operate the former Quickpark facility, where 6,200 spaces are currently lying idle, to see if we can operate it on a temporary basis for the Summer months," the daa spokesman said in response to a question regarding the organization's efforts to address the current shortage of passenger car spaces.
The Fingal County Council will decide on the staff parking application later this year, but an appeal to An Bord Pleanála would guarantee that the issue would not be decided upon until 2025.
