Normal People’s Mescal portrays a grown-up Lucius, the nephew of Commodus, the original film’s antagonist played by Joaquin Phoenix.
In the first Gladiator movie, Lucius was depicted as a child during the story of a Roman general, portrayed by Russell Crowe, who is enslaved after the murder of Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
Gladiator II features Pascal as Marcus Acacius, Stranger Things star Joseph Quinn as Emperor Geta, The White Lotus’s Fred Hechinger as Emperor Caracalla, Oscar-winner Denzel Washington as Macrinus, and Connie Nielsen, reprising her original role as Lucilla.
The trailer includes scenes from the original film, where Lucius recalls witnessing Maximus, played by Crowe, defeating Commodus.

“I remember that day. I never forgot it. That a slave could take revenge against an emperor,” he says.
Washington’s character, Macrinus, offers Lucius the chance to become a gladiator, telling him his rage is his “gift.”
The trailer later shows Lucius battling a rhino with a bloodied horn, ridden by an armoured man wielding a weapon, and fighting Marcus Acacius after declaring to Macrinus that he wants the general’s head.
Gladiator II is set to hit cinemas in November.
