O’Connor, who passed away in London on July 26 last year, has been honoured with this wax figure commissioned by museum director Paddy Dunning and crafted by PJ Hegarty in his final contribution to the museum.
“This unveiling is particularly special as tomorrow marks the anniversary of Sinéad’s passing,” the National Wax Museum stated on social media, sharing photos of the new figure. “Her impact on music and culture has been profound, and it’s an honour to commemorate her with this stunning figure.”
Dunning expressed the museum’s honour in paying tribute to O’Connor with the new wax figure. “I met Sinéad 40 years ago when she walked into Temple Lane Studios for the first time at 17, and I was 18,” Dunning said at the figure’s press launch on Thursday morning. “We’d been great friends and close since that first meeting.”
The wax figure is instantly recognisable, inspired by O’Connor’s look in the iconic “Nothing Compares 2 U” music video.
“The idea behind this statue was to capture her appearance from the ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ video, where she wore black,” Dunning explained, according to The Irish Times. “She was sad and emotional, and the song was brilliantly performed.
“The tear shown in the song was real and touched everyone’s heart, so we aimed to portray that emotion in the statue.
“We chose this song and that poignant moment to remember when Sinéad sprang to international fame, especially with that video and look.”
