Murphy, 48, an Oscar-winner, is set to reprise his iconic role as gangster Tommy Shelby in the movie, which is being helmed by the period drama and crime series creator, Steven Knight.

Keoghan, 31, who earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in the dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin, will appear in the Birmingham-based production in a role that remains under wraps.

The Dublin actor, known for his work in Saltburn, will join the film as the storyline transitions to follow the Shelby family into the Second World War.

The original series, which aired on the BBC from 2013 to 2022, chronicled the rise of the Shelby family in the aftermath of the First World War.

Dune actress Rebecca Ferguson has also been confirmed for the new movie, though Netflix has yet to reveal her character. Knight has described the film as an “explosive chapter” in the story, promising a “no holds barred” approach. Murphy, who will also serve as a co-producer, has called it “one for the fans.”

Earlier this year, Murphy swept the awards circuit for his lead role in the epic biopic Oppenheimer. The Cork native won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for his portrayal of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s film about the father of the atomic bomb.
