The organ at the Portico of Ards, an arts centre in Portaferry, will be the focus of a diverse series of musical events this year, ranging from baroque to dance.

The organ’s versatility will be highlighted during several performances, including the Feel Good Festival in March and the venue’s year-long classical music programme.

Olivier Latry, a resident organist at Notre Dame Cathedral, will perform a mix of his own improvisations and classical pieces, including works by Bach, during a concert on June 1. Latry was the last musician to play Notre Dame’s iconic Grand Organ before it was damaged in the 2019 fire and the first to play the restored instrument during its reopening ceremony in December.

The Portico organ, originally installed in 1917, underwent a complete rebuild and extension in 2015.

Beyond concerts, the instrument is open to the public, offering a digital guide for exploration and opportunities for visitors to play it.

It also features a pre-recorded music selection that allows it to play autonomously. Glass panels encasing much of its internal mechanism offer a glimpse into its inner workings, while its loft features a display explaining its functionality.

Another event on March 15 will feature DJ, producer, and organist Reductio, who will present The Mashup Dance Event, blending house, disco, and techno music.

Neil McClure of Portico of Ards said:

“The historic organ at Portico of Ards is a vital part of our musical heritage, with an unmatched ability to create warmth and connection with audiences. Visitors are always fascinated by its sound and eager to try it themselves.

“We are thrilled to welcome world-class artists to showcase this iconic instrument’s versatility and appeal to a wide range of music fans.”

Built in 1841, the Portico of Ards is a Grade A listed building inspired by Greek architecture and is still used every Sunday morning by the Portaferry Presbyterian congregation.

The organ is based on the original Evans and Barr two-manual instrument installed in 1917 but was entirely rebuilt in 2015, featuring a new case, console, framework, and soundboards.
