Additionally, it would open what has been considered a "crime cul de sac" in the Pineview Gardens estate in the city's Moyross neighbourhood, which has been plagued for nearly 25 years by poverty and violence connected to feuds.

The Coonagh to Knockalisheen distributor road initiative, which is being hailed as revolutionary in its potential to generate enormous economic and social prospects for the Moyross area, has a €31 million construction contract signed by Limerick City and County Council with Wills Brothers Ltd.

In addition to providing a new entrance and exit for the entire Moyross estate, it is seen as a crucial infrastructure project that will assist the region's future economic growth and enhance people' quality of life by giving them easier access to basic services and education.

The Pineview Gardens estate is completely secluded at its topmost northern extremity, and there is now only one road leading into Moyross.

Additionally, it is situated right next to the enlarged TUS Coonagh campus, providing access to that third-level learning environment.

However, this initial segment of the Northern Distributor Road, or NDR, was nearly abandoned when Transport Minister Eamon Ryan intended to replace it in 2021 with more active and public transport as well as bike lanes for the region.

He did, however, essentially make a U-turn on the road's development after facing constant political and local pressure to approve it.
