According to Cillian Murphy, he would be interested in producing “28 Years Later” as a follow-up to the early 2000s zombie success, 28 Days Later.
The British horror-sci-fi movie, which was released in the Ireland in 2003, featured the Oppenheimer actor and fellow Irishman Brendan Gleeson as the main characters. He portrayed Jim, a London bike messenger who awakens from a 28-day coma to see the city in the throes of a zombie apocalypse.
Although its stand-alone follow-up, 28 Weeks Later, was published in 2007, and neither Murphy nor the writers or directors of the original movie were involved, fans have long wanted a sequel that catches up with Jim. Murphy told Collider that he and filmmaker Danny Boyle had just recently reminisced about doing 28 Days Later.
Cillian said: “I was talking to Danny Boyle recently, and I said, 'Danny, we shot the movie at the end of 2000, so I think we're definitely approaching the 28 Years Later. But like I've always said, I'm up for it. I'd love to do it.”
But the Cork native's enthusiasm for the endeavour appears to be restricted to Boyle and Alex Garland, who authored the first movie's script. “I'd love to do it,” he said, “if Alex thinks there's a script in it and Danny wants to do it.”
