The Dublin boxer won all three rounds, advancing to the semi-finals and joining Paddy Barnes as the second Irish boxer to secure back-to-back Olympic medals.


In other events, Tyrone’s Jude Gallagher was defeated by unanimous decision in his featherweight bout against Carlo Palaam of the Philippines, ending his campaign at the last-16 stage.

Later on Wednesday, Ireland’s Aoife O’Rourke narrowly lost to Poland’s Elzbieta Wojcik on a split decision in the 75kg boxing division.


The Irish rowing team has secured spots in four finals at the Paris Games. The latest qualification came from the lightweight double sculls team of Aoife Casey and Mags Cremen, who finished third in their semi-final and will compete in the medal race on Friday. The same day, reigning Olympic champions Fintan McCarthy and Paul O’Donovan will also row for gold, having comfortably won their semi-final in the lightweight double sculls.

Ross Corrigan and Nathan Timoney are the other Irish team to reach a medal race, finishing third in the Men’s Pair semi-final. They will race again on Friday. Additionally, Ireland has two boats competing in B Finals on Thursday, and the men’s double sculls team of Philip Doyle and Daire Lynch will compete in the A Final.

In swimming, Mona McSharry placed 6th in her 200m semi-final, not enough to advance to the final, ending her run in 11th place overall. Earlier, the 100-metre bronze medallist had finished third in her heat.


In badminton, Nhat Nguyen’s singles run ended after losing 2-0 to the defending Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark.
