It will be the first structure on the Trinity campus to have a woman's name.
The University Board meeting was followed by the announcement of the decision today.
In April 2023, the library that had been called the George Berkeley Library was renamed because the well-known Irish philosopher was also an owner of slaves and was seen to be "an apologist for slavery".
The use of Mr. Berkeley's name on TCD's main library, the institution stated at the time, was against its essential values of equality, freedom, human dignity, and inclusivity.
The Trinity Legacies Review Working Group (TLRWG) oversaw a period of study, analysis, and public debate that resulted in the decision to rename the building in Eavan Boland's honour.

There were 855 submissions filed during the public consultation. The board was recommended to adopt the renaming of the building as the Eavan Boland Library, although the working group had suggested a number of other choices.
The poet, who passed away in 2020, was a leading figure in Irish literature. She published numerous poetry collections and gave talks and lectures both in Ireland and the US.
