As two of the biggest names in darts, Littler is aiming for his first world title, while Van Gerwen is in pursuit of his fourth. Throughout 2024, Van Gerwen has played down the idea that Littler is an unbeatable force, despite the teenager’s rapid rise to the top. Their growing rivalry has produced an even record so far, with both players winning six of their 12 encounters.
Van Gerwen has claimed some significant victories, including triumphs in the Dutch Darts Masters final and the opening round of the World Matchplay. However, Littler secured a crucial win over the Dutchman in the semi-finals of the World Series of Darts.
Since bursting onto the scene last year, Littler has not only dominated the sport but also gained mainstream recognition. He finished as runner-up for BBC Sports Personality of the Year, became the UK’s most Googled athlete in 2024, and made numerous appearances on prime-time television.

Van Gerwen, who took over as darts’ leading figure following Phil Taylor’s retirement, may see this final as a chance to reclaim his status. A victory would reaffirm his place at the top of the sport.
Littler’s impressive power scoring has been a key factor in his run to the final. He has hit a tournament-high 64 maximum 180s and holds the highest three-dart average at 102.13. His checkout rate stands at 41%, and he has even executed the coveted ‘big fish’ 170 finish.
Van Gerwen, meanwhile, has thrown 43 maximums and boasts a solid three-dart average of 99.75. However, his checkout accuracy of 44% gives him a slight edge over Littler in finishing efficiency. In any other year, Van Gerwen’s stats would make him the standout player of the tournament—but with Littler in the mix, the stakes are even higher.
The final will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Darts, with coverage beginning at 7:30pm tonight.
