Negotiations between unions and the Government took place at the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) for several hours on Friday, with progress reported but remaining outstanding issues to be resolved.

The ICTU Group of Unions, comprised of the Irish Nurses and Midwife Organisation (INMO), SIPTU, and Fórsa, has argued the Government has not honoured the pay agreement reached in October 2023, committing to restoring the pay link between the community and voluntary sector, and the public sector. Those affected include the staff employed by the Section 39 organisations, which are privately owned charities and agencies contracted by the State to provide healthcare services.

Last month, SIPTU members working in Section 39 organisations overwhelmingly voted in favour of strike action, and the union warned that it will serve notice of industrial action employers if talks fail to deliver a satisfactory outcome.

“In the absence of an agreement on a set of proposals, we will continue to progress the ballot mandate of our members”, SIPTU announced in the update.

The Department of Children, Equality and Disability, has emphasised the crucial role of community and voluntary sector workers, stating they are the backbone of many essential services, and should be fairly paid, recognising their contributions.

“The Government’s priority is clear: To protect these vital services for those who rely on them while ensuring sustainable employment for the dedicated workers who provide quality supports and services”, a department spokesperson concluded.
