The initiative aims to encourage players to remember to frequently apply sunscreen, especially during the hot summer months when UV exposure is most intense and prejudicial.
According to an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Skin Cancer at RUH Bernie Finneran, “approximately 1,290 people are diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer each year in Ireland”.
In Ireland, the UV index can be 3 and higher during the months between April and September. Even during cloudy days, UV rays can be harmful. Therefore, it is extremely important to apply sun protection, regardless of the weather.
The sunscreen dispensers provided include a built-in UV index display to show real-time information about the UV radiation levels, which helps to keep everyone aware about reapplying sunscreen.
The new sunscreen dispensers are located in the dressing rooms at both Roscommon Gaels’ club and Dr Hyde Park. The ultimate goal of this initiative is to make sure sun safety is a routine part of outdoor sports and activities during the summer.
Brian Carroll, Chairperson at Roscommon GAA, has said that “we in Roscommon GAA are delighted to assist in raising awareness of skin cancer prevention to coincide with Melanoma Awareness Month.”
