Woodbrook Station is situated between Shankill in south Dublin and Bray in County Wicklow, becoming the 147th station on the Irish Rail network.
Iarnród Éireann shared a photo of the first train arriving at Woodbrook on social media, highlighting that the station will be served by up to 191 daily services and offers a 40-minute journey to Dublin city centre. The station is strategically located amid new developments expected to deliver around 2,300 new homes in the area.
Minister for Transport Darragh O´Brien was among the inaugural passengers, describing the day as “significant” for the region and an example of the Government’s wider ambitions for rail expansion across Ireland. Construction began in October 2023 with a budget of €24 million, which was impressively delivered under budget.
“This project reflects our plans over the next five years to double capacity on the Dart network, progress the Metrolink, and expand commuter rail services in Cork, Galway, and beyond,” Mr O´Brien told reporters.
Last year saw a record 330 million journeys made on public transport across the country. This minister emphasised the importance of encouraging people to shift from car travel to cleaner, more affordable public transport options.
Barry Kenny, Head of Communications at Iarnród Éireann, described the new station’s opening as a positive outcome of forward-thinking public transport planning. He noted that several housing developments nearby will benefit directly from the new DART station.
Kenny also acknowledged the need for further capacity improvements across the DART network and confirmed ongoing investments aimed at doubling rail capacity in the Greater Dublin Area.
