Kielty, who succeeded Ryan Tubridy as the host of The Late Late Show, was awarded the honorary doctorate for his exceptional contributions to the arts.

The award coincides with the 175th anniversary celebrations of the Belfast School of Art at Ulster University.

Kielty, originally from Dundrum in Co Down, was named UK Documentary Host of the Year at the 2018 Grierson Awards for his Bafta-nominated documentary My Dad, The Peace Deal and Me.

When asked who he thought should be the next recipient of an Ulster University honorary doctorate, Kielty suggested his wife Deeley, host of ITV’s popular daytime show This Morning.

“I think Cat Deeley would be a great choice for an honorary degree. Then she might believe that Ulster University really gave one to me!”

Deeley could not attend the ceremony at Ulster University on Monday due to her TV commitments.

“Apparently, when you’re hosting a live show Monday to Thursday, you don’t get time off,” Kielty explained.

“She still can’t believe that Ulster gave me this honour – she thinks I just came back for a short break and pretended to receive an honorary degree.”

Asked for life advice for Ulster students aspiring to enter the arts and entertainment industry, he humorously replied, “My advice for someone who wants to get into entertainment is: don’t!”
