The native of Clare chose to resign with one year remaining in his three-year term. Fitzgerald, who oversaw Waterford from 2008 to 2011, came back to oversee the county after the 2022 campaign.

Fitzgerald issued a statement on Tuesday evening confirming the information. "After careful consideration, I have decided to step down as manager of the Waterford senior hurling team," he stated.
"I want to express my sincere gratitude to the players for their hard work over the previous two years.”

"I really believe that Waterford has the talent to contend at the highest level of hurling once more.
