This was one spot lower than the 42nd place from the previous year. Out of 38 cities in western Europe, the capital was ranked 26th in the Mercer 2024 Quality of Living city ranking.

Additionally, this was a one-place decline from 2023. "Companies need clear and objective information on quality of living differences between cities when they relocate expatriates," stated Noel O'Connor, Principal of Mercer Ireland.

"Mercer’s Quality of Living reports evaluate the quality of living experienced by international assignees, to provide tangible values for such qualitative perceptions," he stated.

"Dublin’s strong position in this year’s index, 26th in western Europe and 43rd globally, once again demonstrates its attractiveness as a destination for expatriates," he stated.

Vienna, the winner of the award last year, lost the top rank to Zurich this year. The Swiss city was praised for its dedication to sustainability, vibrant cultural scene, low crime rates, and high calibre of public services.

But because of the high cost of housing, transportation, and products and services in general, it is also one of the most expensive places in the world. Geneva, Copenhagen, and Vienna were ranked second and third, respectively.

With eight of the top ten cities and 29 of the top 50 cities situated in western Europe, these cities significantly dominate the top 50 ranking.
