Two of Ireland's greatest athletes are honoured this year: middle-distance runner and two-time Olympian Ciara Mageean, who said it is a "immense honour" to be included among the awardees.

According to the Portaferry sportswoman, "as an athlete, I've always believed in pushing the limits of what's possible," but this award serves as a reminder that success involves more than just individual accomplishment; it also involves the support of those who assist you along the road.

Every time I compete on the track, I am honoured to represent my nation. "I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has helped me this year and throughout my career. Ulster University is also appreciated, and congrats to the incoming graduates who will undoubtedly go on to become Ireland's next generation of athletes and leaders.

Ciara finishes 2024 as the current European 1500m champion, adding the gold medal to her European Athletics Championship silver in 2022 and bronze in 2016.

She has competed in two Olympics and set all Irish middle-distance records, including the mile, 800, 1000, and 1500 meters.
