The award was given to architects Donaghy + Dimond for their skilful conversion of the old 1853 structure of the Model School Inchicore and the creation of a three-story addition.

The architects' delivery of "a project of real delight and social significance for the school and the local community" was commended by the RIAI jury.

A structure designed by an Irish architectural practice, whether it is located in Ireland or elsewhere, is only given the RIAI gold medal once every three years or more.

The prize is given out a number of years after the structure is finished so that time can verify its success.

The Model School was selected from a shortlist that also included a church in Oxfordshire, England; the student facility at the London School of Economics; and the Central Library in Dún Laoghaire. Over ten years have passed since the completion of the school buildings.

"Exquisite detailing, the combination of stone, concrete, and timber forming a rich and sustainable palette, a tribute to the skill, care, and thought, at every level, of the architects" is what sets them apart, according to the RIAI.
