Initially appointed on an interim basis in August 2023, Gleeson was given the role permanently last December. However, after a review by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), it was decided that she would not be offered a new contract.
Gleeson, who succeeded Vera Pauw, led Ireland in a challenging group alongside European champions England, France, and Sweden. Under her guidance, the team earned promotion to Nations League A and advanced to the second round of play-offs for Euro 2025, where they were ultimately eliminated by Wales over two legs.
FAI Chief Executive David Courell praised Gleeson’s contributions: “On behalf of the Football Association of Ireland, we acknowledge the dedication and passion that Eileen has shown in leading the Ireland women’s national team over the last 16 months.
“Eileen has been a fantastic ambassador for women’s football in Ireland, leaving a positive legacy that includes a strong UEFA Nations League campaign, a memorable victory over France in Cork, and a run to the Euro2025 play-offs. We thank Eileen for everything she has done.”
In a statement, the FAI confirmed that the search for a new head coach would begin immediately.
