In addition to voicing their objection to the prohibition of foreign media from operating in Gaza, the Irish executive council of the NUJ called on members to come together in solidarity with their sister union in Palestine and to commemorate all the journalists who lost their lives in the conflict.

A member of the NUJ Executive Council, journalist Emma O'Kelly, informed the Limerick audience that hundreds of journalists have been tortured and injured in Gaza, while 142 journalists have already been proven deceased.

She claimed that this is a terrible precedent for the future and that the assassination of journalists is both unprecedented and premeditated.

She added that the prohibition on foreign journalists working in Gaza was another issue that the NUJ was contesting.

According to her, this hinders reporters from observing and documenting events there, which subsequently aids in the censorship of information regarding the conflict.

The Limerick Palestine Solidarity group, which frequently gathers in the city centre of Limerick to draw attention to the ongoing war in Gaza and its broader ramifications for the state of Palestine, also staged a vigil in conjunction with the NUJ vigil.
