On St. Stephen's Day, a dog murdered a sheep and chased others in Templenoe, while in mid-December, five sheep were killed by dogs near Knocknagoshel, leaving some seriously injured and others missing.
Due to data protection concerns, a map of dog attack events created by Kerry County Council over the last 12 months cannot be distributed or published.
Following the death of over 100 sheep in Kerry by dogs in 2023, Kerry County Councillor Fionnán Fitzgerald requested the creation of the colour-coded map. Mr. Fitzgerald wants the gardaí and the general public to have access to the map so they can use it to help in their investigations.
He claimed that the map's inability to be published is "nonsense" and that it would also help the public understand how widespread the issue is.
According to the Fianna Fáil councillor, it would make local dog owners more conscious of the need to house their pets properly and safely, particularly at night.
"The attacks cause great damage to livelihood, innocent animals endure great pain and suffering plus there is the huge upset, financial and emotional, to sheep farmers in rural Ireland," he stated.
"To be told that such a map, which Kerry County Council have, cannot be published under GDPR requirements is to me to miss the value of the map for the sake of a nonsense," he stated.
