There were 59 acknowledged interface security institutions relocated from the NIO to Stormont when justice duties were devolved to the Assembly in 2010. Of these, one-third have been eliminated, one-third have been scaled back, and one-third are still considered "work in progress."
The DoJ-led Interfaces Programme removed the three-meter-tall metal structure at Water Street, Portadown, in collaboration with the local community and Armagh City, Banbridge & Craigavon Borough Council, as part of the "Together: building a united community" (T:buc) Strategy.
"Removing these physical barriers contributes positively to the development of a truly shared society in Northern Ireland," stated Justice Minister Naomi Long.
"I commend the local community for supporting this important step forward, and significant collaboration has been going on behind the scenes."
The Drumcree Community Trust stated that it "looks forward to the regeneration of the area and welcomes the removal of the Water Street interface."
“We, along with others from within the community, have been working tirelessly for some years and are excited, given the proposed redevelopment of Water Street — an area that has been lying derelict for many years,” said the Obins Street and Park Road Community Association, which also welcomed the removal.
"After consulting with lodge representatives, we welcome the redevelopment of the Water Street area and look forward to all sections of our community receiving further redevelopment and much needed investment," a Parkmount Orange Lodge statement continued.

According to Lord Mayor Sarah Duffy, "the council would like to pay tribute to all community representatives who gave their time so freely and tirelessly.
The removal of this interface barrier at Water Street is the culmination of extensive work and community consultation."
"We are optimistic about what the future holds for the locals, and this is also a significant step in the regeneration of this area."
The abandoned site will be revitalised and redeveloped by a developer.
