Wrightbus, the Ballymena-based transport manufacturer, known for developing the world’s first hydrogen double-deck bus, recently launched its Rightech brand for zero-emission trucking. With over 70 apprentices already employed, the company aims to increase its workforce by employing 60 new apprentices to meet growing demand.

To celebrate Northern Ireland Apprenticeship Week and UK National Apprenticeship Week, Wrightbus is hosting two events. An Apprenticeship Insight Day on 5 February (9.30 am-2.30 pm) offers those aged 16 and over a chance to meet engineers, tour the factory, and explore the bus-building process. Moreover, on 12 February, an open night will welcome aspiring apprentices along with their parents or guardians.

Currently employing 2,200 people, Wrightbus is recruiting for apprenticeship roles in level three manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, fabrication welding, coachbuilding, driveline operations, spray painting, and electrical fields. Additionally, apprenticeships are available in logistics, purchasing, and administration.

Chief Executive Jean-Marc Gales has highlighted the value apprentices bring, “Apprentices are an incredible asset for our company; they bring with them fresh enthusiasm and invaluable ways of thinking, helping us all grow and develop new ideas, processes, solutions and products”

First-year electrical engineering apprentice Ciaran O’Kane transitioned from logistics to his current role “I started in Wrightbus in January 2023 as a logistics operator. I loved the work/life balance but wanted more. By May 2023 I had started a VIE apprenticeship and over the last nine months, I have learned so much and developed so many skills. I very much look forward to what the next couple of years will bring”.

Moreover, Éirinn Lavelle, a fourth-year electrical engineering apprentice also shared that “I have really enjoyed these years so far as I have constantly been learning new skills and information about my job. Everyone is very helpful and a good craic. I would like to progress more in the future - expanding my knowledge and skills”.
