The party had held onto the seven seats it had gained in the last election, with 17 of the 18 seats declared. With four seats, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) came in second but was unable to overtake Sinn Féin.
Ian Paisley Jr., the son of former Northern Ireland First Minister and party founder Ian Paisley, was among the eight seats the DUP lost in 2019. Since 1970, the father and son have been Westminster members.

With a resounding triumph in local council elections the following year, Sinn Féin became the first nationalist party to gain the most seats at the Stormont assembly since Northern Ireland's formation in 1921.
Despite its long-standing stance of not taking up seats in Westminster, it also emerged as the largest party in Northern Ireland.
