Translink is inviting amateur pianists of all ages and skill levels to compete in its Grand Pianist competition, and Lanyon Place Station received delivery of the magnificent instrument yesterday.
Before the grand final at the new station in Belfast, five rail and bus terminals will host the concert piano this month and next as part of a tour that includes heats held around Northern Ireland.
Along with encouraging people to perform on the concert piano and sign up for the regional heats, the Grand Pianist roadshow will make stops at Bangor Train Station, Coleraine Train Station, Newry Bus Station, North-West Transport Hub, Derry/Londonderry, and Lanyon Place in Belfast.
The competition's main goal, according to Translink Group CEO Chris Conway, is to unite people via music.
“We would love everyone to get involved, whether by entering one of the regional heats or supporting someone playing the piano when you’re passing by,” he said.
“We hope the Grand Pianist will brighten passengers’ journeys, as well as uncover local talent to help us celebrate Belfast Grand Central Station which, beyond transport, will ensure Northern Ireland is better connected today and for future generations.”
Translink has selected Matthew Owens, a professional musician with over 30 years of expertise in the field as a conductor, composer, pianist and organist, as chief judge.
In order to find the ultimate winner, he will tour Northern Ireland looking for gifted pianists deserving of a spot in the grand final. There, he will be accompanied by special guest judges.
"I am eager to begin the hunt for gifted local pianists," he remarked.
"Translink's support of the arts industry is commendable as it offers a venue for individuals to showcase their performances to an audience in the breathtaking surroundings of the recently constructed transport hub."
