The Planning Committee of Belfast City Council approved a new seven-classroom primary school on Somerset Street in the Upper Ormeau Road neighbourhood this week.

On the location of the now-demolished Ulidia Primary School, it will feature a single unit nursery, a learning assistance unit, and an autism spectrum disorder unit.

While new bus, automobile, and drop-off locations are being designed, the current site entrances will remain in place and be used for site access. New hard and soft play spaces, border treatment, and walkways will also be added.

After work was not finished within the five-year approval period, a similar request was approved in June 2019 and this week's decision essentially renewed the planning license.

Statutory consultees had no complaints, and council planning officers suggested that elected officials approve the application.
