The partnership, lasting one year, will also feature a special live performance by Morrison across Belfast. The initiative coincides with Queen’s 180th anniversary and the renowned singer-songwriter’s upcoming 80th birthday.

Describing the collaboration as a “wonderful opportunity,” Morrison expressed his enthusiasm for deepening his ties with Queen’s University Belfast. “I am delighted to deepen my relationship with Queen’s University Belfast and look forward to performing at a number of exclusive events throughout the year”, he shared. “This partnership also has a wonderful opportunity to inspire students, celebrate Belfast’s rich musical heritage, and give back by supporting the next generation of musicians”, Sir Van Morrison said.

Professor Sir Ian Greer, Queen’s University president and vice-chancellor, welcomed the initiative. “Dr. Van Morrison is one of the most distinguished musicians of our time, and we are delighted to have him as our ‘artist in residence,’” he said.

As Professor Sir Ian Greer further stated, “This initiative will provide invaluable opportunities for our students and the wider community while enriching our cultural offerings. As a university, we are committed to providing access to quality education to all students, and partnerships such as this are vital to making this happen”.

Morrison, who received an honorary doctorate from Queen’s in 2001 for his contributions to the arts, was also granted the ‘Freedom of Belfast’ in 2013. As part of his residency, he will perform three concerts at Queen’s Whitla Hall later this month, with discounted tickets available for students. Additionally, performances and collaborations will be announced throughout the year.
